Another important lesson that this art teaches is the ability to focus. According to many studies, kids who use coloring pages have better focus skills. As they get older, they can also learn many other skills.
Well, it is fun.
Just how important are colors when it comes to the life of a child? An article by the Early Childhood Center–Indiana Institute on Disability and Community titled, How to help children recognize color, reads, ”When children recognize colors they are noticing, matching, sorting, and labeling the characteristics of the world around them.” The article goes on to say, ”Recognizing colors is a skill that is often difficult for children because it is necessary to know the color words, as well as to identify the abstract characteristic of color.” Colorful books are great for kids because not only are they one of many tools available at our fingertips to help children with the skill of color identification, but colorful drawings and pictures tend to capture their attention.
For less than $10 you can buy a jumbo coloring book and a box of Crayola crayons. There is nothing like the smell of new crayons and getting reacquainted with your favorite color as well as opening a fresh coloring book and looking through all the possibilities before choosing your first page to color.
Printable coloring pages can also be used for other purposes, like coloring contests. Many times the sheets left out on the contest table get wrinkled, ripped and ultimately unusable. So, find printable coloring pages online that you can send your patrons to! All they need is a home computer and a printer and they will have their contest entry picture. If they don’t have a computer at home, print them off their printable coloring pages right on the spot!
Now that you’re an adult, there are no limits
Coloring books for adults is an offspring of art therapy which is a mental health profession that is the process of making and creating artwork which intends to ”explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem” (according to the American Art Therapy Association). So basically, it’s similar to good old therapy. Also, art therapy is not only about mental health and improving yourself – it’s a form of personal expression, as well.
