Nowadays over 80% of public playgrounds have some sort of protective surface around the equipment. Backyard playground are much different – only about 9% of home backyard playgrounds have any sort of protective surfaces, and most have only grass or dirt.
Set some ground rules for your kids to let them know what is allowed, and make it clear that breaking the rules does not come without punishment. With a little cooperation on their part, some sound equipment, and a watchful adult eye, they can have all the fun they want, injury-free.
Of course, the first thing you want to do is decide what type of material you want to use, and there really are many to choose from. I have seen modern playgrounds that use concrete as a surface, and you can imagine how it feels to fall onto something like that. It has to be soft in some manner.
One of the best ways you can be sure of the integrity in the equipment your children are playing on is by setting up a small playground in your own yard so that you have full control of the environment. Always make sure that you have created a setup that is easy to monitor. If your children are very young, you should never let them play alone. Older kids may come with some leeway, but there should always be an adult close by who is checking from time to time to make sure things are on the up and up.
Even for those of us without the luxury of having a playground in our own backyard, our children will no doubt spend plenty of time in playgrounds growing up. And for the most part, that is a good thing. After all, playing outside, especially on play structures, is great for your child’s health, giving them a chance to develop strength, coordination, balance, and cardiovascular health. They also get plenty of sunshine and fresh air.
If you want to cultivate an attractive garden separately that’s great, just place it away from the area where the children will be playing and make sure that they know your gardening space is a no go zone.
