Spinning equipment has dramatically changed from the old style carousels which could be dangerous to a new style which involves a standing platform and central pole which children can stand on and spin. There are also large discs with a dip in the middle that children can sit on and spin. These are brilliant for children to learn how to control weight distribution and can be used both individually and within a group.
Take a look at the surface of your play area as well. Most are filled with some type of loose material, such as sawdust, wood chips, or gravel. The thing with loose materials is that the more packed they get, the less padding they offer to a falling child. Make sure that the running around or the weather has not begun to pack it down, and every once in a while you may want to dig it up and turn it over a little bit to loosen it up.
If you are not going to be around while children are playing, make sure that the playground, whether a public one or an activity center at their school, will have an adult around, keeping an eye on things. An adult can watch to make sure the kids aren’t being unsafe in their play. They also are responsible for taking care of the situation if something does occur, and the best adult supervision is someone who has some type of first aid training.
Nowadays over 80% of public playgrounds have some sort of protective surface around the equipment. Backyard playground are much different – only about 9% of home backyard playgrounds have any sort of protective surfaces, and most have only grass or dirt.
3. Have pads wrapped on metals and invest in good foam carpets – Keep your kid’s playground totally safe by making sure that pads are placed on metal fittings and other essential base structures. You can find such items at discounted prices especially if you have to buy in bulk. You might also want to consider getting foam mats as your playground’s flooring. This is also where a sandy playground floor or a sandbox comes in handy because it softens the fall should such a thing happen.
So, how do you build a safe playground? What are the factors to be considered when building a safe playground?
