c. Joyfully, begin to add colour to the paper. Fill the spaces on the mandala pages with colour and shapes, lines and dots, perhaps even words.
For less than $10 you can buy a jumbo coloring book and a box of Crayola crayons. There is nothing like the smell of new crayons and getting reacquainted with your favorite color as well as opening a fresh coloring book and looking through all the possibilities before choosing your first page to color.
If you want to try this novel way of journaling, you may feel a little intimidated at first. Mandala drawings don’t follow any rules, but we are very accustomed to always listening for direction outside ourselves instead of listening to the still voice within. Don’t let that worry you. Susanne Fincher, a noted art therapist, has many great mandala coloring books out there for anybody to use. You can try her Coloring Mandalas 1 or Coloring Mandalas 2 books. They come with beautiful designs that range from Native American to Escher-like modernism. After you’ve unwound a little and want to attempt your own mandala drawings, not just coloring someone else’s, you are ready to start doing a mandala journal.
Flash fast as the right brain can take in pictures at a glance and the child would be able to see an ”after image” when his/her eyes are closed.
