Hanging apparatus usually conjures up memories of those hours spent trying to master the monkey bars as a child. Monkey bars remain one of the most challenging pieces of playground equipment and are now available in a variety of lengths of solid bars, swinging trapeze, parallel bars and up and over bars. These pieces of equipment help children build up their upper body strength as well as providing a sense of achievement once they have completed them.

Noise reduction – This is a great feature, especially when the play area is in a dense residential area. Infants and night shift workers may be trying to sleep during the day. Noisy kids can be heard for quite a distance!

One of the greatest benefits children get from natural playgrounds is the development of their motor skills. They get the same benefits from commercial playgrounds, too, but not up to the extent to which they get while playing in a natural playground. The natural settings boost their senses of feeling and touching through the textures and natural sounds.

Of course, the surface integrity can be threatened any time foreign objects are accidentally mixed in. Before putting in the fill, make sure to properly remove any thick tree roots. Clear away any glass, metal, or stones.

For the play space itself sew a hardy type of grass that can stand up to a little abuse and consider having cedar chips laid underneath climbing frames and swings to cushion any falls.

Take a look at the surface of your play area as well. Most are filled with some type of loose material, such as sawdust, wood chips, or gravel. The thing with loose materials is that the more packed they get, the less padding they offer to a falling child. Make sure that the running around or the weather has not begun to pack it down, and every once in a while you may want to dig it up and turn it over a little bit to loosen it up.
