4. Enhance Social Skills

Of course, it is the youngest of children that need the most attention. Not only are they often oblivious to how easily they can be hurt, but they are not coordinated enough to play on the equipment as well as older kids do. The different dynamic between younger and older kids playing in the same place, however, makes them want to try, and this is where injuries often occur.

I love trying to come up with new ways to make kids thrilled with hanging out in the yard, doing something active. In fact, thinking back on my own childhood, I remember designing miniature playgrounds myself out of makeshift parts (think basketball hoops made of old bicycle rims). It disappoints me sometimes to see how little imagination some children put into entertaining themselves, but looking at all the easy options they have, I can’t say as I blame them. Often, they just need a little direction and some time on their own to get creative.

If you are not going to be around while children are playing, make sure that the playground, whether a public one or an activity center at their school, will have an adult around, keeping an eye on things. An adult can watch to make sure the kids aren’t being unsafe in their play. They also are responsible for taking care of the situation if something does occur, and the best adult supervision is someone who has some type of first aid training.
