How much space do you have in your backyard? If you have a large yard, there is no concern. Many new homes, however, have limited backyard space. You should not place kids playground equipment up close to any structure they could fall and injure themselves on. Fences, trees and the home itself should be six to nine feet from the playset for proper safety precautions. While a playground should not be set too close to a fence, it is often desirable to make sure you have a fenced in yard if you choose to install a play area. If you live near a busy street, it becomes even more important in preventing excited children from running into the street.

2. Use non-toxic materials – Kids tend to be very curious with the things around them and before you knew it, they might be putting stuff inside their mouth especially when you can’t see them. To help prevent unwanted events from happening, you should make sure that the stuff you have around the playground are safe and non-toxic. Some materials can also harm your kid’s skin or even cause sudden allergies if they are not made to be non-toxic.
Probably the best protective surface to use is rubber playground tiles, also known as playground mats. Rubber playground tiles are great because you can get many different thicknesses, from 1” to 4 1/4”. This is great because the CPSC has a statistic called the ”Critical Height of Playground Equipment”, which is the highest point that kids can get to on any piece of playground equipment. Once you know the critical height, you can figure out the thickness of playground tiles or mulch that’s needed for that area.
One of the first things you want to check for is deterioration of any kind, whether from weather or wear and tear. Broken equipment can cause unnecessary hazards, and weather can have a devastating effect on certain materials over time. Plastic, for example, will become brittle when exposed to extreme cold or sunshine. Metal can corrode or rust. Wood, which is the most durable, is even subject to some splintering and cracking-it’s isn’t indestructible.
Weather resistant – If the tires of your car can easily endure rain, snow, summer heat, hail and other weather conditions, so will your playground surface made from recycled rubber.
