We should make sure that play structures like swings and seesaws must have a protective surface of at least 12 inches underneath them and at least 6 feet in all directions to prevent serious injuries in cases of fall. For swings, surfacing should extend twice the height of the suspending bar front and back.
Spinning equipment has dramatically changed from the old style carousels which could be dangerous to a new style which involves a standing platform and central pole which children can stand on and spin. There are also large discs with a dip in the middle that children can sit on and spin. These are brilliant for children to learn how to control weight distribution and can be used both individually and within a group.
Another best idea is to have a separation of all the activities in the play area including a separate place for the pretentious activities like home or school for the enjoyment of kids. There has to be space allocation for playing with sand and water. While this may apply to you or not based on the space allocation you are having for the play area. When you are going to purchase the necessary things locally then place close attention to the area of the playground.
Possibilities for injuries to occur in a playground come sometimes from the equipment itself-for instance, deteriorating materials, unsafe designs, and unstable surfaces-but a lot of the injuries that occur are the result of unsafe or careless actions. The good thing about this is it puts it well within you and your child’s control.
Therefore spending lots of money on buying very expensive playground equipments is not a guarantee of the child’s safety when he or she is using it. In fact statistics show that over two hundred thousand accidents resulting from injuries and wounds sustained in the playgrounds are treated annually. This rounds up to over five hundred occurring on a daily basis. Injuries that can be sustained from using the playground equipments include joint dislocations, bone fractures, concussions occurring as a result of the head hitting the ground and a host of others.
A simple, cheap addition is a basketball hoop-hang it low enough for your kids, and of course, a chunk of pavement is typically an asset for dribbling. Don’t let it hold you back though-as I mentioned before, my brothers and I played by shooting through a bicycle rim nailed to a piece of dirty plywood, and believe it or not, we were dribbling on hard dirt that had been swept clean.
