When my husband and I were taking courses at American Institute of Holistic Theology, I took an elective class on Mandala art and he took Feng Shui. While I was shading and tinting on black paper creating designs that reflected my inner soul, Randy was arranging furniture, moving knickknacks and making sure each room had the proper color and placement of the five elements: earth, fire, water, wood and metal. One spring morning Randy came in from working in the yard and said that he wanted to start a Feng Shui mandala in our backyard. I could see in my mind a maze-like labyrinth with tall hedges and sacred coves to meditate, but he had a totally different idea. He wanted a flower garden that allowed energy to flow by following the Chinese art of color pattern and cardinal direction.
Look at the Christian’s usage of the labyrinth or marvel at the mandala healing ceremony performed by American Indians and you will find that the sacred circle has transcended its ancient roots. Many present-day religions and civilizations have come to view the mandala, with its gentle symmetry, as a symbol of the balance in nature, the unity within the world, and the harmony we all seek within our lives. Even the world renowned psychologist and founder of analytical psychology, Carl Jung was struck by the healing abilities of the mandala. Licensed art therapists use mandala coloring as a way to help patients end anxiety and learn stress relief.
But in modern society, our hearts must beat faster to handle the pace. From every direction we are bombarded with words, sounds, colors, shapes and movement as we try to puzzle a meaning out of what our senses report to our busy brain. Our minds, our bodies struggle to combat against this relentless attack.

Few activities can involve as many different people as coloring. Everyone is equal at the coloring table, and sharing can be the natural result. Coloring is simple and fun, a great way for adults and children to bond in a mutually satisfying activity. A wide variety of skill levels can be accommodated by the plethora of coloring books available on the market.
