Crayons… they are something that everybody has loved at one time or another. I can still remember the excitement of opening up a new box for the first time and seeing all of the colors lined up in a perfect row. Every tip was new and unbroken, making coloring that much more exciting. Careful consideration was used on which crayon to color with first. Was it going to be basic blue or red, or maybe one of the more exotic Crayola colors like purple mountain’s majesty or macaroni and cheese? No matter what color a child may use, it has been shown that coloring with crayons, whether in a coloring book or just on a piece of paper, can really be important in the life of a child.
Sun catchers: Children love the colors that are thrown across the room through sun catchers. You can help your child create a melted crayon wax sun catcher. Give your child a pencil sharpener and let them make crayon shavings. Fold a large sheet of wax paper and sprinkle crayon shavings on half of it. With a warm iron, run the iron over the wax paper quickly. Allow the wax paper to cool and then cut it into various shapes. Make butterflies or flowers with holes in them where you can tape the melted crayon wax sun catcher on the back so the light and colors shine through.
In the oven: Set your oven to 250 degrees. Create new crayons by melting the old broken pieces. Break the pieces up into smaller pieces and sort the crayons with like colors. Place the crayon pieces into an old muffin tin. Put the tin into the oven and then turn the oven off. Watch the crayons so they don’t melt entirely. When the crayons have melted sufficiently, remove them from the oven and then place the tin into the freezer for half an hour. Take the tin out and then pop the new, larger crayons out.
Today, there are approximately 120 colors of crayons currently available. Some have glow in the dark properties, some are scratch and sniff, some change colors when used on paper, others have glitter combined with the crayola crayons wax in such a way as to allow drawing made with glitter crayons to glisten in the sunlight. From a parenting perspective, the easy wash off the walls formula is a scientific breakthrough of phenomenal proportions.
My daughter is developmentally delayed and autistic, which is very sad, yet at the same time there are many joys. She loves coloring, even as a teenager she has a very large box of coloring books of many types. She loves crayons, especially the new scented crayons; these are crayons that leave behind a scent after you color with them. They have some really good scents such as roses and linen, but most of them smell, well yucky, to me. They have scents such as dirty sneakers, wet dog, and other unusual scents.
Binney & Smith were two men who cared about the world around us and in particular they were concerned with making the schools of the early 20th century safer and more productive for the children and teachers of that generation. Binney & Smith has been faced with competition recently from other manufacturers of crayons. However, Binney & Smith have the history of meeting the challenges of creating tools to embrace and encourage creativity and education.
