Coloring mandalas is a peaceful pastime used by a variety of peoples and institutions to heal the mind and the body. As someone with both General Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder I know first hand the calming, meditative power of mandala coloring and drawing. The more I color the easier it is for me follow the hypnotic rhythm of the action and push the anxiety away. This is why you can find mandala coloring and creation being used in nursing homes, elementary schools, cancer wards, and mental health facilities across the country. It is simple and it works.
Beware, they are addictive.
Trees also contribute to the vast array of mandalas in nature. A cross-section of the trunk reveals the tree rings. But pinecones also have a beautiful symmetry when held upright.
The visualization and concretion of the mandala concept is one of the most significant contributions of Buddhism to religious psychology. Mandalas are seen as sacred places which, by their very presence in the world, remind a viewer of the immanence of sanctity in the universe and its potential in his or her self. In the context of the Buddhist path the purpose of a mandala is to put an end to human suffering, to attain enlightenment and to attain a correct view of Reality. It is a means to discover divinity by the realization that it resides within one’s own self.
Whether you choose a painting, a sculpture or a mandala painting, art is a wonderful gift idea for everyone on your list. You will sure make an impression on anyone with such gift and make them truly feel special. Whichever you choose, art is a thoughtful gift for any occasion.
But when we pick a Mandala coloring design and begin coloring, something wonderful happens. Simple hand movements allow energy to flow from us unto the page. Easy subconscious choices of colors express pent-up emotions. Fleeting feelings and half-formed thoughts are poured silently into the endless circle. The Mandala takes it all in. No resistance, no objection. A heavy burden is lifted from our minds and is transferred, transcended, consumed without effort by the Mandala.
