Active meditation when combined with art is particularly effective for stress relief. I have found that thirty minutes of active meditation can reduce anxiety and even help with panic attacks. Even a short ten minutes is enough to produce positive results. As you enjoy practicing your active meditation you will find it continually gets easier to relax and achieve a peaceful, meditative state.
Flash fast as the right brain can take in pictures at a glance and the child would be able to see an ”after image” when his/her eyes are closed.
How about vegetables as geometric designs? Cut a tomato in half crosswise, and you’ll find a centre piece of the stem, with segments around it, each containing the seeds and juice. A cross-section of a bell pepper shows the veins and seeds, and the underside of a mushroom reveals the stem and the many lines of gills. Artichokes form one of my favourite designs. All of these are mandalas in nature.
Step Four: Watch the design take life with every stroke. Allow yourself to experience the movements, hear the sounds of the pencils on paper, or feel the markers as they glide across the page. As thoughts or pictures pop into your head (and they will) simply acknowledge them and then return your focus to the coloring. The movement will always bring you back.
It takes a lot of effort to do so, and we rarely get a chance to stop during the day and regenerate. When evening comes, our mind is filled with contradicting images, unsorted facts and a kaleidoscope of memories and ideas. Our entire nervous system is stimulated to distraction and even our bodies are charged with stress chemicals caused by runaway emotions and sensations. It is no wonder that we often end our day fatigued, stressed and unhappy. We get back home yearning peace, hoping to relax, but even the familiar surrounding isn’t enough to quiet our abused senses.
Unlike writing a diary, doing a mandala journal invokes the transpersonal in its non-verbal form, which is a very powerful way to connect directly to your spiritual essence. The right-side of your brain, for once, does not interfere as much and you can have insights and flashes of inspiration, which come into greater focus by doing mandala drawings or even coloring within mandala coloring books. It’s this transpersonal aspect that makes a mandala journal a very meditative, transpersonal, experience which will produce unique revelations to each individual that tries these exercises.
